Wayfinder Family Services

Wayfinder’s mission is to ensure that children, youth and adults facing challenges always have a place to turn. Founded in 1953 as the Foundation for the Junior Blind, we initially enabled blind and visually impaired children to lead fuller, more independent lives. Today, Wayfinder is a human services agency with expertise in child welfare, vision impairment and multiple disabilities. Across our programs, Wayfinder strives to achieve equity for all our clients, most of whom are low-income people of color. We serve nearly 20,000 children, youth, adults and family members annually. Our name became Wayfinder Family Services in January 2018

Arlington Pediatric Center

APC was founded in 2001 to provide a "medical home" to Arlington's medically underserved children, ages 0 through 18 years of age, whose family income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. A "Medical Home" offers outpatient medical care that is comprehensive, accessible, continuous, family centered, coordinated, and compassionate. It is delivered or directed by pediatricians who manage or facilitate essentially all aspects of pediatric care. The physician develops a relationship of mutual responsibility and trust with the child and family. APC care is culturally competent, and interpreters are provided for the families who speak little or no English. All of our families face the daunting challenges of poverty. Most are recent immigrants from Central and South America, but families are also from Ethiopia, Mongolia, Turkey and other countries. They are unfamiliar with US practices and standards of health care. Too often patient care has been absent or delayed, and is complicated by psycho-social concerns caused by poverty, ignorance, illiteracy, cultural barriers, poor mental health and addictions. Intensive parent/patient education and case management is needed as a high percentage of our children are at risk for abuse and neglect. APC works closely with public health, school health, child protective services and other agencies to link children and families with needed services.
