AURA

AURA has a long history steeped in the ideal of supporting and aiding refugees on their journey towards a better life here in Canada. The roots of the work AURA does today are embedded in the desire of people wanting to help the mass exodus of refugees from South East Asia in the late 1970’s. The plight and flight of these people is the genesis of the current Canadian refugee sponsorship program. Working as a Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) and representing another SAH, AURA works to train and support groups who want to take an active role in assisting refugees from around the world. The current refugee sponsorship program that AURA works within is designed to support refugees who are making their refugee claims from outside of Canada.

COMMUNITY LIVING YORK SOUTH

In 1954, a group of concerned parents and friends sought alternatives to placing children with intellectual disabilities in an institution. They believed these children could live fulfilling, satisfying lives at home with their families and become an integral part of the community. These parents formed the Thornhill and District Association for Retarded Children which later became York South Association for Community Living and then Community Living York South. The words “Community Living” reflect the growing understanding that the right to live a fully integrated life within the community - to live, to go to school, to work, to enjoy recreation and to be active in retirement -belongs to all.
