United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District

United Way of Sault Ste Marie & district (UWSSM) - through community engagement identified four priority issues; health, employment, poverty, and youth concerns. Working with the non profit and volunteer sector, UWSSM facilitates solutions to these issues, resulting in community impact. UWSSM continues to fund these community priorities through three focus areas: Healthy people, strong communities; From poverty to possibility; and All that kids can be. These three focus areas affect many individuals around us and their need for support continues to grow. Everyday people that are experiencing tough times benefit the most from our services and we have all had tough times at one time or another, we may have just been more fortunate in our lives not to need these services. We fund 48 programs and services offered through 21 member agencies and other community partners. Change starts here. For more information on our programs go to www.ssmunitedway.ca

LDS

Over 18,000 children and youth in B.C. are diagnosed with a Learning Disability. With few resources in the school system to support them they are being left behind. By definition children with learning challenges are of average or above average intelligence but blocks in one or more areas of the brain mean they have challenges understanding and using language and their ability to receive, process, recall or communicate information is affected. Learning challenges can lead to social anxiety, low self-esteem and many other challenges. Together we can help. LDAV offers remedial teaching that builds confidence by helping children understand their unique strengths and teaches them strategies and skills for overcoming their challenges. Armed with these tools children can advocate for themselves in school and access the education that will allow them to achieve their dreams. Every child has the right to learn and the power to achieve. Help us make this a reality today.
