The Canadian Lifeboat Institution (CLI) is a marine search & rescue service, dedicated to conducting its affairs in the tradition of the world's lifeboat services. It was founded in 1981. Since that time, CLI members have participated in over 3,000 rescues, working in close cooperation with other search and rescue organizations. Instead, it relies on personal donations, corporate sponsorship and community grants to meet its commitments. All members of the CLI are volunteers and receive no financial reward for their services. In meeting its objectives, the CLI does not attempt to replace the Canadian Coast Guard or its Auxiliary, but provides vessels and trained crews, found from volunteers amongst all walks of life in the community, to assist local, provincial and national agencies to save those in peril on the waters of Canada.
