November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Help us spread our message of diabetes management and prevention. The Canadian Diabetes Association works in communities across the country to promote the health of Canadians and eliminate diabetes through our strong nationwide network of volunteers, employees, healthcare professionals, researchers, partners and supporters. In the struggle against this global epidemic, our expertise is recognized around the world.

High Park Initiatives (HPI) works to facilitate the protection, conservation and ecological restoration of High Park's woodland, savannah and wetland ecosystems. Our mandate is achieved through carrying out and providing support for various innovative restoration, public education and research programs. The main vehicle through which HPI functions is the High Park Nature Centre. This award-winning environmental education centre located within High Park aims to offer an enriched educational experience that will have a long-term impact on individual attitudes toward the natural environment and contribute to the protection of High Park’s rare and significant natural areas.

Hospice of Waterloo Region serves all ages and assists clients with any terminal illness. The compassionate and practical support offered by our staff and volunteers extends to all family members. Each client/volunteer relationship is unique and is determined by the particular needs of the individual. Volunteers provide respite care and enrich people’s lives by sharing their gifts of listening, caring, friendship, love, humour, and support. Hospice of Waterloo Region hosts programs and provides services at no charge to individuals and families. No one need die alone. We offer companionship to live in dignity and comfort.

JUMP Math enhances the potential in children by inspiring an understanding and love of mathematics. JUMP Math is a philosophy and a set of mathematics resources that aim to improve the teaching of mathematics and to help students enjoy and meet their potential in the subject. The JUMP Math program is based on the belief that all children, even those diagnosed as having serious learning disabilities or who are failing, can excel at math. Mathematics, rather than being the most difficult subject, can be a subject in which children can most easily succeed in – even at a young age – and can thereby develop the confidence and cognitive abilities they need to do well in other subjects.

For many years the Friends of Quetico Park, has sponsored summer students for assistance with the Park’s summer programs. By assisting programs such as the Natural Heritage Program, an educational program run for youth that visit Dawson Trail Campground, we have helped educate Canada’s youth about the beauty and cultural wonders of our park. We have assisted the John B. Ridley Library with numerous students over the years to support library services. We have purchased books and shelving units for the library to broaden its collection and its appeal to all visitors to the Dawson Trail Pavilion. The story of Youth Singers of Calgary began in September, 1985, when Shirley Penner founded a small 28 voice Junior High choir at the Mount Royal Conservatory. Following four successful and exciting years of operation and growth, Shirley recognized a need in the community for a choral based performing arts organization that would add elements including dance, theatre, production, staging and lighting. Shirley enlisted help from fellow artists and educational professionals, and they came together to create an organization whose commitment to music, excellence in teaching and strong teamwork endures to this day. Almost thirty years later, Youth Singers continues to be a model for ingenuity, innovation and collaboration, providing broad performing arts training and opportunities for young people.

The Scout House organization began in 1938 and developed into a championship competitive Corps in North American. It disbanded in 1967 and reformed in 1998. In 2012 the Scout House Cadet Drum & Bugle Corps formed with a 10 person drum line. It has now added a 20 person horn line and is executing a five year plan to reach a 90 person competitive Corps. Cadet ages range from 10 to 18 and up to 83 in the Scout House Band with younger members continually joining. (17 new band members in 2014). No member receives any compensation for their services. The Band is managed by an elected Board Of Directors under a Province of Ontario Corporation Charter. It is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency 88877 4791 RR0001. Funds are derived solely from corporate and personal donations, performance fees and fundraising events. Financial challenges include instrument replacement, uniform replacement, transportation equipment and performance regalia.

Join the Dance is the Ontario representative for Pierre Dulaine's internationally acclaimed Dancing Classrooms of Mad Hot Ballroom and Take the Lead Fame. A 10 weeks Inter-curricular, Character Education program for children and youth that utilizes ballroom dancing as a vehicle to change the lives of not only the participants, but also the lives of the teachers and families who support them. Academic components of History, Geography, Literacy, Public Speaking and Social Studies are woven intricately into the joy of the dance that provides 50-minutes of good physical fitness and mental health stimulation. Culminating events allow diverse school communities to Join the Dance and Dancing Classrooms are fully endorsed by the Toronto Public and Catholic Boards. $100 will provide 1 student in a classroom with twenty 50-minute sessions for ten weeks. $2,000 sponsorship/donation provides the program to one entire classroom.

Bear mortality related to human conflicts is perhaps the largest single factor affecting long-term population viability. As human populations continue to extend into bear habitat throughout North America, either through residential development, recreational use or industrial use, bear human conflicts increase. Our organization aims to reduce human caused bear mortality and incidents of human-bear conflict. This is achieved through specialized training courses and innovative applied research. We are involved in a variety of initiatives that focus on reducing people’s interactions with bears while living, working and recreating in bear country. These include our unique Bearproof Garbage Bin Loaner Program, Bear Hazard Assessments, and Natural Attractant Management. Please see www.bearconflict.org for more information.

Canada World Youth (CWY) is a world leader in developing international educational programs for young people aged 15 to 25. Thanks to the support of donors, partners, host families and the government, since 1971, CWY has enabled over 36,000 youth to participate in programs across Canada and in 67 countries around the world.

Established in 1994, the Design Exchange (DX) is a not for profit registered charity with the mandate to promote the experience of design. As of March 2012, a new strategic plan was adopted whereby the DX has revitalized its strategic direction and refined its mandate to be a Design Museum offering exhibitions and programming with broad public appeal. DX exhibitions will cover the various design disciplines including fashion, architecture, interior and industrial design, digital design and more, by presenting designers, products, projects or themes that reflect popular contemporary culture. The DX relies on the generous donations received from individuals, foundations and corporations. Every tax-deductible gift to the DX helps us to support and present our Youth Education Programs, including Tours + Workshops, camps, and competitions. The Fraser Valley Youth Society currently operates the only service for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning and Allied youth in Abbotsford. Our drop-in hosts 30 youth per week. Our goal is to facilitate a safe, open and non-judgmental space for youth to express themselves. This is achieved through our weekly drop in where youth can come and share experiences, learn life skills, build resiliency skills and gain social supports. The society liaises with local services and those in surrounding communities in order to link our youth with support that goes beyond what we can provide. We participate in the Vancouver Pride Parade every year as well as other events hosted by GLBTQ service providers in Metro Vancouver. We recently celebrated our fourth annual ‘Walk Away from Homophobia’ in Abbotsford. This event was attended by our youth and 160 other community members who take a vested interest in the issues faced by GLBTQ youth. We welcome your support!
