DELTA FARMLAND AND WILDLIFE TRUST

Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (DF&WT or the Trust) is a non-profit charitable society established in Delta, BC in 1993. Our board of directors represents a partnership of farmers, naturalists, and community-minded individuals working co-operatively as a team to find solutions to land-use problems on farmland in the community. Recognising the significance of the Fraser delta to large numbers of migratory and resident birds, the Trust was formed to empower local farmers and naturalists to co-operatively implement farm stewardship programs and promote sustainable agriculture. The Trust, along with many local residents, believes that the survival of the soil-based agricultural industry in Delta is essential to the survival of the nationally and internationally important species of wildlife in this area. With this in mind, we work with farmers on a cost-shared basis to encourage sustainable farming practices that consider wildlife needs.

CASTLE CROWN WILDERNESS COALTION SOCIETY

CCWC seeks to protect the endangered Castle Wilderness, on Provincial Crown Land north of Waterton Lakes National Park in the SW corner of Alberta. This 1041 sq km expanse of land is the most biodiverse in Alberta, with almost all the species that were present at European contact (lacking only the bison). While the Castle Wilderness is partly still wild and healthy, incursions are present and expading (sour gas, logging, invasive plants, and motorized recreation). CCWC is a supporter of the Castle Special Place Conceptual Proposal that would grant protection of the Castle as a combination Wildland/Provincial Park.

SACKVILLE RIVERS ASSOCIATION

In the past, the SRA has undertaken many projects, ranging from salmon habitat restoration to lobbying (successfully) for flood plain zoning and protection. Our efforts are concentrated on protecting and restoring salmon habitat, reconnecting fragmented salmon habitat, rebuilding salmon habitats through restocking, and educating the public through our two educational in-classroom programs River Rangers and Fish Friends. We are also working on developing a watershed management plan for the Sackville River Watershed, based on our existing Sackville River Ecosystem Plan (SREP). The expertise used to design and implement the protection, restoration activities and education materials comes from our volunteer membership, assistance from government staff at all levels, donated time from local consultant firms, and summer students when funding is available for them. Using this approach we have been quite successful to date.
