CORNER BROOK STREAM DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

CBSDC is a charitable organization whose prime focus is the development, expansion, and maintenance of a series of walking and hiking trails. The network originally paralleled the Corner Brook Stream, and has since expanded to interconnect key areas of the city providing a green transportation alternative. This river system flows through the city providing industrial and potable water, while also giving walkers a respite from city life within its natural corridor. The stream is also home to successful reintroduction of a sustaining run of Atlantic salmon. The trail system has been instrumental in influencing healthy lifestyle choices; providing recreational opportunities such as birdwatching, snowshoeing, skiing, jogging, geocaching, orienteering, swimming, etc. CBSDC has also partnered with local schools and educational facilities to assist in programming and use of the trails as a venue for a variety of academic pursuits. PELEE ISLAND BIRD OBSERVATORY

Long-term migration studies provide valuable population indices for species that are difficult to survey by other means due to the inaccessibility of their breeding and wintering grounds. Government and conservation groups use this information locally and internationally to address a broad range of concerns about the population status of many familiar Canadian birds. The purpose of the Breeding Birds of Pelee Island Project is to further our understanding of the breeding bird populations on the island, including population density, nest productivity and survivorship, habitat requirements, species diversity, nest predation rates and brood parasitism. PIBO has initiated a variety of activities geared towards public education, including regularly scheduled bird-banding demonstrations for school groups, field-naturalist clubs, and the general public. The projects provide volunteer opportunities and comprehensive bird banding training for all long-term volunteers and interns.

GABRIOLA LAND AND TRAILS TRUST

GaLTT has a multi-year plan to establish a continuous system of public trails from one end of the island to the other between Descanso Bay and Drumbeg Provincial Park. We're very close to our goal now but negotiations with private landowners and government bodies are in progress, and we hope to achieve our goal SOON. Gabriola Land & Trails Trust (GaLTT) is successfully achieving objectives as shown by the strategic plan on our website. This past year (2012) has been productive. We have implemented numerous trail licences to provide public access across private lands. Licensed trails are one of the ways used to provide trail linkages in our community. Many trails and shore accesses are provided on undeveloped road allowances. Protection of island ecosystems is enhanced through securing conservation covenants (easements), and through advocacy in favour of parks and conservation. We have established land acquisition fund for the future purchase of lands.
