GRANDRAVINE SPECIAL HOCKEY

The hockey teams, known as Grandravine Tornadoes, are on the ice approximately 26 weeks of the year, 2 hours per week. Participants do not need to know how to skate or play hockey, just the will to play the sport, as the program is geared to individual needs. We encourage prospective new members to come out with family members and observe our teams in action. Watch the interaction–and enjoy the positive atmosphere. All participants are coached and instructed in “day-to-day coping skills” and, after these have been mastered, take part in hockey practice sessions, skill improvement sessions and, hockey games against each other and against other teams in the Special Hockey International League.

LAND CONSERVANCY FOR KFLA

The Conservancy celebrated its tenth birthday in June 2014. It currently owns five properties totaling 122 hectares and holds an easement on a 71 hectare property. It monitors a 31 hectare property for the Ontario Heritage Trust. It plans to acquire more properties following its acquisition policy and strategic plan. Over 125 members support the work of the Land Conservancy with many volunteers doing stewardship work, monitoring properties, and evaluating potential acquisitions. An 11-member Board manages the organization. We are very proud of all that we are accomplishing as a non-profit, entirely volunteer land trust dedicated to “keeping nature near … always”. WCS Wildlife Conservation Society Canada

WCS Canada implements and supports comprehensive field studies that gather information on wildlife needs and then seeks to resolve key conservation problems by working with a broad array of stakeholders, including local community members, conservation groups, regulatory agencies, and commercial interests. From Yukon to Labrador we work to conserve wolverine, grizzly bears, freshwater fish, lynx, caribou, and many other Canadian species. Major issues addressed to date include protected-area design, wildlife monitoring and recovery, and integrated landscape management. WCS Canada is an independently registered and managed program of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), headquartered at the Bronx Zoo, New York, which operates conservation programs in over 55 countries around the world. WCS is a recognized global leader in conservation, dedicated to saving wildlife and wildlands in order to assure a future for threatened species such as elephants, tigers, sharks, macaws and lynx.

ONTARIO FARMLAND TRUST

OFT actively protects farmland by working directly with landowners who have a desire to see their farms permanently protected for agriculture. We offer both landowners and community groups tools, such as farmland conservation easements, that can be used to protect individual properties of value to them. OFT also assists in raising awareness of the impacts of farmland loss, the need for greater farmland preservation and the importance of land stewardship. We provide ongoing volunteer and learning opportunities and encourage collaboration amongst diverse stakeholders, including farmers, local food groups, land use planners, health advocates and government.

ONTARIO HEADWATERS INSTITUTE

The well-being of Ontario’s headwaters - flows that recharge groundwater, create wetlands, and provide the base-flow for our streams and lakes – is fundamental to maintaining our freshwater capital. Waters seeping into and coming from aquifers, babbling through forests and meadows, nursing the biological diversity of our wetland complexes, and flowing through our valley corridors provide the sources of our streams, lakes, and groundwater. Our ecological tapestry, our food supply, our very existence depend on the availability and quality of our headwaters. Indeed, our freshwater capital is one of the pillars upon which life rests, and upon which our quality of life depends. We cut off our headwaters, drain them, or pollute them at our peril. The Ontario Headwaters Institute seeks to preserve our headwaters, and to identify, engage, and partner with organizations in this common cause.

MAHONE ISLANDS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

Mahone Bay is known throughout the world for its beautiful islands and shorelines. These islands provide: unique habitat to a variety of plants and animals, breathtaking natural landscapes, and traditional access for recreational activities. The islands of Mahone Bay are ecologically significant. These drumlin islands provide unique habitats to support a diversity of species. Yet there is increasing pressure on the ecological integrity of the islands from human activity and development. Such activities can adversely impact and degrade fragile coastal habitats and threaten native wildlife species. MICA has worked since 2003 to bring several of the islands under public ownership. And it has succeeded with the help of many individual donors, the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, and the Long Island Preservation Society. Ten islands are now available for public use in perpetuity.
