WOMEN'S CRISIS SERVICES OF WATERLOO REGION - ANSELMA HOUSE & HAVEN HOUSE

We operate two shelters; Anselma House in Kitchener and Haven House in Cambridge, plus regional Outreach services and a regional 24/7 Crisis Line, for abused women and their children. With your generous donation, you will help provide a safe place free from abuse for women and their children and ensure that they have the necessary tools to allow them to move forward in a life free of violence. Women’s Crisis Services relies on community support in order to offset our funding shortage between the number of beds for which we are funded and the number of women and children we actually serve. This community support enables us not to turn women and children away who need to find refuge. We thank our supporters for enabling us to help the families we serve to move beyond violence. Making a donation will help abused women and their children find safety and support as they begin moving beyond violence.

Rainbow Railroad

While we have made great strides towards equality in Canada, lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-identified (LGBT) people still live in basic fear for their lives in many parts of the world. In the spirit of, and with homage to the Underground Railroad, the mission of the Rainbow Railroad is to help LGBT people as they seek safe haven from state enabled violence, murder or persecution. Rainbow Railroad is a volunteer-based registered charity. Who do we help? Our current focus is on LGBT individuals who have faced physical violence or face an imminent threat of violence. Currently we are working with LGBT communities where our connections are strongest in the Caribbean, Africa and former Soviet States.

LAUNCHING PAD RECOVERY SOCIETY

The Launching Pad commenced operation in June of 1994 at a 12-bed facility in Aldergrove, B.C. The founding fathers were Dave Houston who purchased the house and Ed Warnke who managed the facility and continues to do so today as Executive Director. In 2001, we moved to our present facility in White Rock, where we provide room and board for 28 residents and help alcoholics and addicts learn how to lead clean and sober lives. The White Rock house was already zoned for a care facility and had been operating as a seniors’ home for some years prior to our arrival. The property, about a half acre, has proved to be ideal for our purposes and is well situated in South Surrey on the White Rock border. In 18 years of operation, the Launching Pad has seen several hundred men recover from addiction, and provided room & board for about 2000 men for varying lengths of time. We became a non-profit society in February of 2002, and have registered charity status.

BEAR CONFLICT SOLUTIONS INSTITUTE (formerly Karelian Bear Shepherding Institute of Canada)

Bear mortality related to human conflicts is perhaps the largest single factor affecting long-term population viability. As human populations continue to extend into bear habitat throughout North America, either through residential development, recreational use or industrial use, bear human conflicts increase. Our organization aims to reduce human caused bear mortality and incidents of human-bear conflict. This is achieved through specialized training courses and innovative applied research. We are involved in a variety of initiatives that focus on reducing people’s interactions with bears while living, working and recreating in bear country. These include our unique Bearproof Garbage Bin Loaner Program, Bear Hazard Assessments, and Natural Attractant Management. Please see www.bearconflict.org for more information.
