Pledge to make a difference, together.
To advance gender equality in Africa by preparing young women for professional careers in the traditionally male-dominated fields of journalism and photojournalism.
Peninah Nalubega recently graduated from the 4th cohort of students in Uganda. As a result of the year-long training she received from Cameras For Girls, Peninah found full-time work as a photographer for a local NGO in Uganda, which benefited her by allowing her to travel to Rwanda and Uganda to tell stories of their beneficiaries. She is also now volunteering with Cameras For Girls to support other young women to tell their stories.
The girls from our 3rd cohort gather together along with the beneficiaries of our partner NGO, Concern For The Girl Child, to learn ethical storytelling and to start the years of training with a well-build portfolio of work to support their goals of getting paid work as journalists and photojournalists in Uganda's male-dominated media landscape.
Our 2nd cohort of students is in the field on the 4th day of the workshop to learn how to tell and record ethical stories with our partner NGO, BRAC International. This 4th exercise helps them work with their gifted cameras, interview the beneficiaries of BRAC's programs, and develop a 500-word article that will start building their portfolios.
In June 2024, Cameras For Girls launched our Train the Trainer program in Uganda to prepare five accomplished graduates of our 4-phase program to become the next generation of skilled trainers. The Train the Trainer program supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on gender equality (SDG #5), poverty reduction (SDG #1), and decent work (SDG #8). By preparing women to be trainers, we challenge traditional norms, dismantle gender-based barriers, and provide tangible examples of female leadership in the African media industry. These trained educators will mentor new cohorts, creating a ripple effect that promotes social progress, economic development, and a more inclusive media landscape across Africa. This initiative empowers women and ensures they earn a livable wage, further contributing to economic stability and gender equality.
Cameras For Girls aligns with UN SDG goals by tackling poverty (#1) through empowering women in Africa to gain employable skills, promoting gender equality (#5) by providing women with tools and training to succeed in male-dominated media fields, fostering decent work and economic growth (#8) by helping women secure paid jobs, and building partnerships (#17) with global organizations to expand opportunities and resources for their students.
