Founded by Maxim Mazumdar in 1979, Stephenville Theatre Festival has enriched the economic and cultural fabric of the Bay St. George area while becoming a major tourism draw for the region. The festival has also been widely recognized for having made a substantial contribution to the development of theatre in Newfoundland and Labrador. The festival has provided training and hands-on experience for numerous artists, many of whom are now among the top professional artists in the province and country. The festival creates employment for a significant number of people each year and attracts a large number local residents and visitors. These factors make it a significant economic generator for the Bay St. George area. The festival's longevity can be directly attributed to the fact that it is created by, for, and with the community it calls home.
