Our Mission

Founders Peter and Catharine Whyte were artists and philanthropists. Peter was born and raised in Banff, a member of one of Banff's pioneer families. Catharine was from a distinguished Massachusetts family. Far from the wild peaks of the Canadian Rockies, Catharine Robb and Peter Whyte met at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art in 1927. They married in 1930, and made Banff their home. Their interest in culture and understanding of philanthropy led to the development of the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation, and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, which opened in 1968.
